2023 Season Opener & Armed Forces Night Recap

2023 Season Opener & Armed Forces Night Recap

It was an awesome start to the 2023 racing season at the Jamestown Speedway on Saturday night, May 27th sponsored by RM Stoudt Inc. There was a lot of great racing and tons of hard-fought battles throughout the night. With the hard-fought racing, it led to several accidents last night and we had two rollovers on the front straightaway. We are thankful that both of the drivers that rolled are okay and doing well today. Hopefully, the cars can be repairable and we'll see you back on the track again soon.

Good job to the track prep crew for their hard work this past weekend. The track had some character in it as frost was coming out of the track in a few of the corners and made for a soft surface. However, the track was racy and had a bunch of side by side battles during the feature events. Overall, it was a great night for racing and in total, we had 105 cars in the pits to do battle on Saturday Night!

Congratulations goes out to our feature winners and runner-ups:

Bombers/Pure Stocks - 20 Cars:

  • Winner: Seth Howe-Kellar (1st Jamestown Win!), Runner-Up: Kelby Anderson
  • Hard Charger: Erik Busche +13 (16th to 3rd)

A fast and hard fought race in your Bombers. A lot of drivers were mixing up positions up front during the feature event. Billy Carow, Jayden Michaelsohn, Joe Jacobson, Seth Howe-Kellar, Asher Williams, and a charging Travis Edinger were battling hard for the lead up front. With 5 laps remaining, the leaders went three-wide up front with Seth Howe-Kellar up high, Billy Carow on the bottom, and Jayden Michaelsohn in the middle. The leaders got caught behind a lap car and a wreck ensued as the top 5 all piled up together and went off the top of turn 3. Seth Howe-Kellar was able to continue and so was Billy Carow after he pitted for a new right front tire. However, Jayden Michaelsohn, Joe Jacobson, and Travis Edinger obtained too much damage and went pit side. After going back green, Seth Howe-Kellar held off a hard-charging Kelby Anderson, who finished 2nd, Erik Busche had a nice run to 3rd, Asher Williams in 4th, and Leann Christensen rounding out the top 5.

INEX Legends (Sponsored by Wright Insurance Agency) - 27 Cars:

  • Winner: Donavin Wiest, Runner-Up: Alex Kukowski
  • Hard Charger: Donavin Wiest +11 (12th to 1st)

There was a bunch of side by side and close racing in the Legends feature race. Alex Kukowski was able to move past Ryan Erdahl and Collin Compson to grab the early lead. The headed action started early as Austin Wiest slowed out of Turn 2 on the second lap with a mechanical problem and Glenn Mitchell had no where to go and hit Austin's car right behind the drivers door. Both cars were damaged too heavily to continue. When the race went back green, Donavin Wiest was moving towards the front after starting in 12th place. Donavin Wiest caught Alex Kukowski and the two were side by side for a few laps and raced each other hard lap after lap. The race was flagged by several cautions and unfortunately, the race ended early as the feature went over the allocated 20 minute time limit. A terrible rollover occurred coming out of turn 4 as two cars got together and the car of Talon Seckerson ended up flipping after hitting the front straightaway wall. Luckily, Talon was able to get out of the damaged car on his own power, but the race ended due to going over the time limit. Therefore, Wiest won, Kukowski was 2nd, Preston Martin took home 3rd, Collin Compson was 4th, and Ty Olson took him a great 5th place finish.

Wissota Midwest Modifieds - 17 Cars:

  • Winner: Lucas Rodin, Runner-Up: Jaren Wibstad
Hard Charger: Tony Smith +5 (14th to 9th)

This race went caution free finishing in under 7 minutes. Defending Stampede Champion Lucas Rodin was able to get around Jaren Wibstad early in the race and set the pace. Jaren Wibstad held off a charging Jarod Klein and Preston Carr, who was moving forward from the 6th starting position. However, Lucas Rodin led all 20 laps and picked up the opening night win. Jared Wibstad was 2nd. Preston Carr was making the bottom work and was right on the bumper of Jarod Klein as they crossed the finish line in 3rd and 4th place. Travis Traut ran inside the top 5 all race and finished in 5th.

Wissota Street Stocks (Sponsored by Kramlich-Deede Meats) - 18 Cars:

  • Winner: Billie Christ, Runner-Up: Geoff Hellman
  • Hard Charger: Chris Ritter +9 (17th to 8th)

The Street Stocks put on a great show and had some great battles. They were high, low, and in the middle battling throughout the top 10. Billie Christ and Geoff Hellman paced the field from the start of the race as Billie took the lead and Geoff ran in 2nd. Chris Welk Jr, Dustin Erickson, Jeremy Castro, Jaden Christ, and Clay Gentzkow were battling hard for 3rd place. Welk Jr had a great run in the top 3 and held off all challenges for the top 3. However, after an early caution, Welk Jr got too high coming out of turn 4 and clipped the front stretch wall to barrel roll down the front straightaway. Chris Welk Jr was able to get out of his car under his own power and we are thankfully he was doing okay after a nasty rollover. After the restart, Billie Christ and Geoff Hellman moved away from the battle for third as Dustin Erickson held off a hard-charging Jeremy Castro, who was working the bottom of the Speedway to get around Clay Gentzkow for 4th. Clay Gentzkow held off Jaden Christ to finish in the top 5.

IMCA Modifieds - 17 Cars:

  • Winner: Shawn Strand, Runner-Up: Lucas Rodin
  • Hard Charger: Lucas Rodin +10 (12th to 2nd)

What a great race in the IMCA Modifieds. Marcus Tomlinson and Shawn Strand put on a show early up front as Tomlinson was on the bottom and Strand on the high side as they were side by side for the first few laps. Behind your leaders, they were 3 and 4 wide battling from 5th back to 12th as they were all over the Speedway. Kollin Hibdon had worked his way to the front and passed Tomlinson for 2nd, but was a little over 2 seconds behind Strand. However, a caution came out with about 10 laps completed as Hibdon got too high going into turn 3 and flew off the banking. A caution was called with Hibdon going to the back for the restart. On the restart, Strand held the point with Logan Schmitz, Tomlinson, Lucas Rodin, and Josh Eberhardt battling hard for spots in the top 5. Rodin moved past Tomlinson into 2nd after starting 12th on the field. Tomlinson moved back into 3rd, but the battle was heating up behind the top 3 as Kollin Hibdon was moving back to the front on the bottom of the track as Josh Eberhardt was using the high line and Jordan Sours was moving forward in the middle groove. Shawn Strand won the season opener over Lucas Rodin in 2nd, Marcus Tomlinson with a great run in 3rd, Kollin Hibdon finished in 4th, and Josh Eberhardt rounded out the top 5.
